To become a Teaching Member under the current rules, a person must be over the age of eighteen years and meet ONE of the following four conditions (A1, A2, A3, A4):

Holder of a degree in music from a recognised university or tertiary institution (Examples are Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music (Performance), Bachelor of Music (Honours), Bachelor of Arts with a major in Music, Bachelor of Music in Education or Master of Music), OR, holder of a diploma in music teaching which requires at least 3 years full time study.

Application Requirements

(Please have all photocopies of qualifications authorised (to be sighted and signed by a Justice of the Peace or a Lawyer) prior to sending to the MTAQ office)

2. Copy of the relevant certificate (to prove actual award) OR letter from the relevant institution confirming award of the qualification

3. Academic transcript of the course (which shows clearly the major instrument that the applicant has studied)

4. Administration Fee (Surcharge of 3% applies to all payments received by credit card.)

5. Copy of Marriage Certificate (This is only required if the name on the supplementary documents differs from the applicant’s name)

Holder of any teaching diploma in music awarded by an authority approved by MTAQ OR a teacher of music who has satisfactorily completed a course accepted by the MTAQ Council for Accreditation Examples are ATMusA, LTMusA OR TMusA from AMEB and ATCL (Teach) and LTCL(Teach) from Trinity College London. (NB: Performance certificate level is NOT sufficient for teaching membership).

A teacher of music with at least 5 years experience and student examination results (five students per year) from an MTAQ approved examination body covering that period (NB: Results must reflect teaching over various levels). Highest personal performance level must also be submitted (e g AMusA) and /or details of professional performance experience.

A teacher of music who satisfactorily completes a video audition as to teaching ability and personal performance level, conducted on behalf of the MTAQ Council. See Video Guide or Print Guide as a PDF document

Persons interested in the objectives of the Association but do not teach music (this is NOT an MTAQ Accredited Teaching category).
