Student Performers Society

Held on 26th July 2008

Masson Music, 1513 Logan Road, Mount Gravatt

The second Student Performers Society for 2008 was held on 26th July 2008.  This was a truly an amazing day.  Students performed at the beautiful Music Schools Australia auditorium located above the Masson Music store.  Thirty-seven talented students from beginners level to LMusA played and sang, many from memory, and we all enjoyed listening to talented performers on strings, voice and the piano. The music was wide ranging from popular, to jazz to classical and very entertaining.  We would like to thank all the students for preparing so hard for this concert and the parents for encouraging their children.

Our aim is to provide a performance opportunity for the students in a safe environment, to experience performance and performance nerves.  We are encouraging students to present themselves well and to acknowledge their audience.  Students learn from experience and gain confidence in performance etiquette and presentation. It is also a great motivational tool as well and a wonderful way to prepare for a special event such as an exam, eisteddfod or a major performance at their school.

We were very pleased to see how far some of the students have improved from last year and to welcome so many new faces from different teachers.  We would also like to thank those teachers sitting in on the concerts and supporting their students.

We are encouraging more instrumentalists to join us and if needed, the Society can provide an accompanist (providing music is sent in with the application… no sight-reading on the day!).

The Student Performers Society is also offering a scholarship of $200. Anyone who has performed in a 2008 concert (or will perform in the October concert) is eligible to apply. Simply write a letter to the MTAQ Council explaining why you deserve to win the scholarship and what you would do with the money should you be successful. Send your applications to the MTAQ, Suite 26, 200 Moggill Road, Taringa, 4068, by 26th September 2008.

We would like to thank Masson Music for providing such a wonderful venue, and the MTAQ for their support; without them these performances would not be possible.

Finally, we would like to thank Kaori Kondo for helping us on the day and Judith Neal from the MTAQ for supporting us.

We are looking forward to seeing more performers on October 11th, closing date September 19th.  You’ll need to send in your applications early, as places will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and some applications have already been received.

Student Performers Society

The first Student Performers Society Concert for 2008 was held on May 3rd 2008.  The Performers Society is now in its second year and is becoming very successful.  We are now situated at the beautiful Music Schools Australia auditorium located above the Masson Music store.  Thirty-four students performed and we all enjoyed hearing cellists, singers and pianists, standards ranging from a beginner through to Completion Certificate.  One student recorded her performance for her music extension assessment for year 12.  The music was wide ranging (popular, jazz and classical) and very entertaining.  We would like to thank all the students for preparing so hard for this concert and the parents for encouraging their children.

Our aim is to provide a performance opportunity for the students in a safe environment, to experience performance and performance nerves.  It is a great motivational tool as well.  Students and parents can see how a concert is run and the students learn  performance etiquette and presentation.  We were very pleased to see how far some of the students have improved from last year and hope to see them again.  We are en- couraging more instrumentalists to join us and the Society can provide an accompanist (providing music is sent in with the application… no sight-reading on the day!).

We would like to thank Masson Music for providing such a wonderful venue, and the MTAQ for their support, without them these performances would not be possible.

We are looking forward to seeing more performers on July 26th, closing date July 16th.

 October Concert

Saturday 13th October 2007

This was our third and final concert for the year.

We were very pleased to see so many talented performers playing for us on this day.  The range was from beginners who had only had 5 lessons and playing folk songs, to a student preparing for AMusA.  The styles ranged from the classics to Billy Joel and the program was enjoyed by all.

The feedback from students, parents and teachers has been very favourable.  Personally we have found that our students have improved controlling their performance nerves and also are discovering how to prepare for such an event.  Some teachers wonder if the student needs to be of a very high standard.  The answer is no!  We encourage everyone to experience this opportunity and use the performance to motivate and inspire the

student by watching other talented performers.  We all know that playing an instrument can be a lonely occupation and meeting up with like minded people can be a positive influence.

We already have plans and dates underway for the new year.  Next year we are holding the performances at the Music Schools Australia Auditorium, above Masson Music at Mt Gravatt.  Each performance will consist of two sessions, lasting approximately one to one-and-a-half hours each, starting at 1:30 on Saturday afternoons, on May 3rd, July 26th and October 11th. The dates have been chosen to help students and teachers to prepare for their exams, eisteddfods and final school performances.

We are encouraging instrumentalists and singers to attend and we can assist with accompanists and practise sessions.  Groups from schools are also invited to participate.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank Ellaways for all their help during the year.

Finally we would like to thank the MTAQ for supporting and guiding us through the year.

Have a wonderful break, Merry Christmas and safe New Year.

The Second performance of the MTAQ’s Student Performers Society was held on Saturday 18th August, with the generous support of Ellaways. We held three full sessions from 1.30 to 4.30.  The performers ranged from Preliminary piano up to Completion level, instrumentalist, including saxophone, violoncello, and a singer performing a beautiful blues number.  It was a very entertaining afternoon with many styles and genres from Bach to Brubech.  Parents and teachers were impressed by the standard of the performances, the beautiful grand piano and stage lighting (supplied by Ellaways).

We were happy to see so many talented students who have said that they learn from the experience of performing and of watching others as role models. The third session of each concert is designed to show case the senior students and has proven it is a great concert to attend.

We have had great feedback and already there are several bookings for the final concert of the year on October 13th.  We have chosen this date so students can use this opportunity to prepare for their final exams at the end of the year.

To encourage more instrumentalists at our next performance the Student Performers Society are arranging accompanists.  For more details please check the MTAQ information or contact Brenda Hunting or Deanne Scott.  The SPS would also like to thank the Mums and Dads who do the taxi runs and of course all the musicians who practice like crazy to show their best in performance.

We would also like you all to know that any profits made from these concerts will go directly to the scholarships sponsored by the MTAQ.
