Membership Categories and Application Requirements

(A) Professional Member

The Council may admit, at its discretion, a person as a Professional Member, if that person is over the age of eighteen years and meets ONE of the following three requirements:

1.        The holder of an award – a degree/diploma in music from a recognised university or tertiary institution which includes suitable pedagogical training in the instrument/skill/field to be taught or an instrumental teaching diploma from an examination authority approved by Council – along with a minimum of one year’s full time or two years’ part time documented teaching experience. Where the degree or diploma does not include suitable pedagogical training, documented additional successful teaching experience will be accepted at the discretion of Council; or

2.        A teacher of music with at least 5 years’ experience who has produced documented evidence of results – e.g. examinations, awards, competitions for at least five of the teacher’s pupils in each year of that teaching period. Highest personal performance level must also be submitted and/or details of professional performance experience, as well as evidence of ongoing professional development.

3.        A teacher of music who has satisfactorily completed a course accepted by the MTAQ Council for Accreditation.

Please Note:

  • Performance certificates alone are NOT sufficient for Professional Membership.
  • For accreditation to teach written subjects (e.g. theory of music, musicianship, harmony and
counterpoint, Music Craft), the following criteria apply:
    1. a B.Mus. degree (or equivalent) is considered sufficient qualification for all levels of written subjects; or
    2. In the absence of a B.Mus. we require documented evidence of:
  1. (a)completion of two grades higher than the grades you are seeking accreditation to teach; or
  2. (b)successful teaching experience (e.g. student results) of the grades you are applying for accreditation to teach.
  • MTAQ encourages the Professional Member to continue with Professional Development.
  • It is a legal requirement that all teachers working with children under 18 years of age must have a current Blue Card.

The applicant for Associate membership should demonstrate that they intend working towards attaining the full qualifications/student results required for Professional Membership.

Please note:

  • An Associate Member will be required to provide information regarding their teaching and performance experience.
  • An Associate Member will attend (where possible) professional development workshops and be mentored (where possible) by a recognised teacher of music.
  • A person may hold an Associate Membership for a period of eight (8) years, during which time they are encouraged to upgrade their membership to Professional Membership with further pedagogical study and teaching experience or by accumulating student results with at least five (5) years teaching experience, presenting to Council documented evidence of results – e.g., examinations, awards, competitions of at least five (5) of the teacher’s pupils in each year of that teaching period, along with evidence of professional development.
  • If an Associate Member requires more time to upgrade their membership, Council will, upon request, review their situation and may extend the period allowed for upgrading.

Web Listing

Our new database listings now distinguish three categories of skills:

  • Primary skills taught (accredited)
  • Secondary skills taught (accredited)
  • Other skills taught (not accredited)

The first two of these are straightforward – these are the skills for which you have provided evidence of qualifications and/or experience and form the basis of your membership classification. The division into Primary and Secondary skills taught enables you to list your skills more precisely – for example, you may have attained professional status in one instrument and associate in another, or you may wish to list your instrument as your primary skill, and written subjects for which you are fully qualified/experienced as a secondary skill.

Some teachers may wish to teach skills for which they do not have the appropriate qualifications and/or experience, so the 'Other Skills Taught (not accredited)' has been added for this purpose.
