 MTAQ Membership Application Guide 2011

Please read this document before completing the Application Form.

General Details

Each MTAQ branch currently has its own fee structure. You will need to contact the relevant branch for information regarding their fees. Contact details for each branch are appended to this document.

Supporting documentary evidence must be posted to:

·         Either The Secretary, MTAQ, Suite 26, 200 Moggill Road Taringa, QLD 4068 for applications for Brisbane Branch and all Teachers’ Groups

·         Or the MTAQ branch that you are wishing to join, for regional Branch applications.

There are five membership categories available from MTAQ: (A) Professional Member, (B) Associate, (C) Student, (D) Friend of the Association, and (E) Journal Subscriber.

Categories (A), (B) and (C) qualify for reduced cost Public Liability Insurance.

It is a legal requirement that all teachers and volunteers working with children under the age of eighteen must hold a Blue Card / Suitability Card. Information regarding the issuing of Blue Cards and the required written Risk Management Strategy can be found on the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian website, www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au - for further information, please phone: 1800 113 611. For your assistance, MTAQ has provided a template for a written Risk Management Strategy. It is available online on our Members Only Page - for more information, please contact the Secretary at mtaq@mtaq.org.au.

Applicants are required to send an authorised copy of their Blue Card when they submit their application.

Membership Categories and Application Requirements

(A) Professional Member

The Council may admit, at its discretion, a person as a Professional Member, if that person is over the age of eighteen years and meets ONE of the following three requirements:

1.        The holder of an award – a degree/diploma in music from a recognised university or tertiary institution which includes suitable pedagogical training in the instrument/skill/field to be taught or an instrumental teaching diploma from an examination authority approved by Council – along with a minimum of one year’s full time or two years’ part time documented teaching experience. Where the degree or diploma does not include suitable pedagogical training, documented additional successful teaching experience will be accepted at the discretion of Council; or

2.        A teacher of music with at least 5 years’ experience who has produced documented evidence of results – e.g. examinations, awards, competitions for at least five of the teacher’s pupils in each year of that teaching period. Highest personal performance level must also be submitted and /or details of professional performance experience, as well as evidence of ongoing professional development.

3.        A teacher of music who has satisfactorily completed a course accepted by the MTAQ Council for Accreditation.

Please Note:

·         Performance certificates alone are NOT sufficient for Professional Membership.

·         MTAQ encourages the Professional Member to continue with Professional Development.

·         It is a legal requirement that all teachers working with children under 18 years of age must have a current Blue Card.

Application Requirements for Professional Membership

5.       Evidence of the applicant’s performance ability in the chosen field(s) for which they are applying (by means of academic transcript, examination certificates or reports)

The Council may admit, at its discretion, a person as an Associate Member, who is over the age of eighteen years and who does not yet have all of the qualifications listed above under Professional Membership, e.g., has a music degree without pedagogy subjects in the instrument for which the applicant is seeking membership, or is in the process of accumulating the required number of student results. The applicant for Associate membership should demonstrate that they intend working towards attaining the full qualifications/student results required for Professional Membership.

Please note:

·         An Associate Member will be required to provide information regarding their teaching and performance experience.

·         An Associate Member will attend (where possible) professional development workshops and be mentored (where possible) by a recognised teacher of music.

·         A person may hold an Associate Membership for a period of eight (8) years, during which time they are encouraged to upgrade their membership to Professional Membership with further pedagogical study and teaching experience or by accumulating student results with at least five (5) years teaching experience, presenting to Council documented evidence of results – e.g., examinations, awards, competitions of at least five (5) of the teacher’s pupils in each year of that teaching period, along with evidence of professional development.
