Introducing
Graeme Wright Denniss
PhD,
BA(Music), Grad
Dip (Music)
Dr Graeme
Wright Denniss brings over 30 years experience to all his teaching areas of
Piano, French Horn, Composition and Theory.
Piano: Won a Piano prize in each of his 4 undergraduate
years at Queensland Conservatorium.
Student of the
Year 1977, Double Majors Piano and French Horn.
Semi-finalist
at Dom Polski Piano Competition, Adelaide Festival 1975
Accompanied
James Galway for the Queensland Flute Guild.
Worked as
accompanist for Janet Delpratt’s students 1975-7.
Currently
teaches over 40 students, all levels and styles, at Cannon Hill Anglican
College, where he also runs Piano Club, a social and performing group, each
week.
Teaches on 6
ft 2 Bluthner Grand at his purpose designed music studio in Birkdale.
Students have
been successful in all levels of AMEB exams, Year 12 Music Extension and
Eisteddfods
French Horn: Performance history: Principal Third Horn in
the Melbourne Symphony 1981-95.
Member of Buzz
Brass Quartet 2003-7 (Musica Viva in Schools)
Member of
Melbourne Brass Ensemble 1984-7 (Musica Viva Countrywide, and ABCFM live
broadcasts and recordings)
Commercial
work: toured with Elton John, Frank Sinatra, John Farnham
Played in
films: Man from Snowy River, Phar Lapp.
Member of
Queensland Symphony Orchestra 5th Horn 1978-81
Member of
Queensland Youth Symphony, all positions 1974-77
Taught at:
Queensland Conservatorium, Somerville House, Melbourne University, Institute of
Education, Methodist Ladies College, St Pauls School, Brisbane Grammar, St
Stephens, currently at Cannon Hill Anglican College and home studio.
Students have
been successful in all levels of AMEB and Tertiary exams, Eisteddfods,
Scholarships, auditions for youth orchestras and professional positions.
Composition: Available for regular lessons or
consultations, and commissions.
Currently
teaches Composition at Sheldon and Cannon Hill Anglican Colleges.
Solo
compositions are included in the AMEB French Horn and Bass Clarinet Syllabuses,
ANZCA Piano Duet syllabus.
Awarded PhD in
Composition at University of Queensland 2004
Received
Australia Council grant 2002, piece performed by Topology in Brisbane Powerhouse
Commission for
Churchie Orchestra performed in Westminster Abbey in presence of the Queen for
Australia Week 2000.
Won Dorian le
Gallienne award 1987, work recorded by ABC
Works
performed and/or recorded by Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras,
Queensland Philharmonic and Youth Orchestras.
Recent
Premiere performances include 2 movements of Concerto for Oboe and String
Orchestra and Songs of the Ming Dynasty, performed at the 4MBS Festival.
Theory: Grade 3 and above, small classes or individual
tuition and consultations available. Emphasis on Harmony and Melody Writing
from composer’s viewpoint.
